The Victorian Fury will look to continue their 34-game winning streak when they host the NNSW Waratahs in Round Three of the Australian Netball League (ANL) at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Saturday.
It will be the first of two games against the Waratahs this weekend with a second to take place on Sunday at Hisense Arena following the ANZ Championship clash between the Melbourne Vixens and the NSW Swifts.
The Fury got their season off to a winning start with two comfortable victories against the Canberra Darters a fortnight ago.
It was a real team performance on both occasions with all 12 squad members getting game time across the two matches.
Star mid-courter Elle Bennetts believes it will take that same effort again if they are to be successful against potent NSW outfit.
“The Waratahs are always a tough match up so it will take a full game effort and it will be a really tough battle,” Bennetts said.
For a large percentage of the Fury squad, this weekend’s fixtures will make it three matches in quick succession after they were released to their Victorian Netball League clubs on Wednesday night.
Fury goaler Kate Thomson said it is hard work backing up from matches.
“It is more of a mental game as it is a physical one, in the end, some weeks are harder on the body but everyone has been great in terms of coaching and support staff, and they work really closely with us and we have been able to really manage well so far,” Thomson said.
This season the 22-year-old has also been switching between attack and defence. For the Fury, she plays as a goaler, the role she grew up playing, while for VNL club, the Geelong Cougars, she has been learning the defensive craft.
“I think it has helped to have both ends as it allows me to learn what defenders can do on a good goaler, but also what defenders don’t like being done to them and vice-versa,” Thomson said.
The Fury’s first match of the double-header against the NNSW Waratahs will take place at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Saturday night at 6pm.
