The 2015 Australia Post One Netball Community Award winners were announced yesterday, which included St Mary’s Netball Club in Dandenong and Christine Perry of Bendigo.

Individuals, Clubs and Associations from across the country were encouraged to nominate their local inclusion champions for the awards.

Now in their second year, the Australia Post One Netball Community awards recognise and reward those that go above and beyond to create and support inclusive netball environments.

St Mary’s Netball Club – who won the Inclusive Netball Community of the Year Award at last year’s Netball Victoria Gala Awards – received a One Netball Award for the work being done to support girls, women and families from multicultural communities.

Christine Perry was also awarded a prize pack worth more than $1,000 for her efforts in supporting and engaging the Karen community from Burma in netball at Golden City Netball Association in Bendigo.

Penny Collins, President of St Mary’s Netball Club, is ecstatic with the win and looks forward to delivering more inclusion programs in the future.

“It’s nice to be acknowledged for the work we are doing, but we don’t do it for the glory. We do it for the girls, women and families who come to Australia and experience feelings of isolation and exclusion.”

“We want everyone to feel welcome at St Mary’s, regardless of where they come from. Our Club is our family and we want to give everyone the opportunity to feel welcome and important,” said Collins.

Christine Perry agrees that netball is more than a sport; it’s an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.

“It’s important to provide an inclusive environment within your netball community to ensure that people feel comfortable and safe.”

“Working with the Karen community has been an absolute pleasure and I look forward to welcoming more members at Golden City Netball Association,” said Perry.

Whilst the Australia Post One Netball Community Awards have concluded, nominations for Netball Victoria’s Community Awards remain open until Friday 31 July.
