Netball Victoria is pleased to announce coaching appointments for both the 2016 Victorian Fury program and the 2016 Victorian State Team Program.

Cathy Fellows has been named head coach for the 2016 Victorian Fury program, with Kate Upton announced as assistant coach and Robyn Dawson the apprentice coach.

An experienced High Performance Coach and selector at both state and National level, Fellows has recently been working as the Head Coach of the Netball Victoria Talent Squad program and has previously held the position of head coach for both the Victorian Fury and Victorian Flames team.

With previous experience within the Melbourne Vixens program and a proven track record in the development of younger athletes, the selection of Fellows to return as head coach of the Fury, will help continue to build on the strong Victorian netball pathway system.

Upton will spend her second year with the Fury as the assistant coach, with previous experience as the 2015 19/Under Victorian State Team Head Coach.

Having recently attended the Netball Australia National 19/Under TID tour of New Zealand, Upton is excited for the challenge.

The team will be supported by Robyn Dawson, who re-joins the Netball Victoria High Performance program after previous experience within the Victorian State Team programs and Victorian Netball League, as well as previous appointments with Melbourne Phoenix.

In 2016, the format of the Australian Netball League (ANL) has shifted, with a move to align the competition with the ANZ Championship to assist with player load and development. The ANL will run from late April to late June with many matches played in conjunction with the 2016 ANZ Championship fixture.

The key objectives for the ANL competition are to:

  • Provide opportunities for ANZ Championship players (particularly bench athletes) to play in the ANL during the ANZ Championship season.
  • Create a more demanding and intense week-to-week ANL competition.

The competition draw is yet to be finalised but at present the draft includes the following:

  • 7 week round robin competition followed by finals weekend.
  • Every team plays every other team twice (14 total matches).
  • The season includes bye weekends.
  • Likely commencement weekend of 23 April/24 April 2016.
  • Likely finals weekend 25/26 June 2016.

In light of these changes, the 2016 Victorian Fury program will include a Daily Training Environment (DTE), which assists in managing athletes transitioning between multiple high performance programs.

Netball Victoria and the Victorian Fury staff will work closely with the Melbourne Vixens program, Victorian Institute of Sport program and VNL club programs. Netball Victoria will select 12 athletes (not including Melbourne Vixens athletes).

Selections will be held in late January with athlete applications open in November.

A 15 week DTE environment will be implemented for athletes which includes Strength and conditioning, technical sessions, athlete wellbeing and recovery. The program includes 7 weeks of competition + 1 week finals and at present is planned to commence on the 2nd week of February continuing through to the ANL Finals on the 25th and 26th of June.

Netball Victoria believes the program will provide an environment closely aligned to the Melbourne Vixens program and will assist in the development of athletes and coaches. More information will be released to clubs as well as athletes as soon as the draw and competition rules are confirmed, this will assist in framing the program in more detail.

Netball Victoria would like to congratulate the appointed 2016 Victorian Fury coaching staff as well as the following coaches and team staff on their appointments within the Victorian State Team Program.

Netball Victoria High Performance Manager Rebekah Webster said the organisation was excited to have mix of experienced coaches and team personnel, along with a number of new faces joining the High Performance program.
