After endorsing the responsible gambling charter with the Hawthorn Football Club, the Melbourne Vixens welcomed the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation to deliver an education session on 10 December 2014.
In an intimate group setting, the foundation spoke with players about their role in the community in promoting responsible gambling, particularly to their young fans and parents.
Some of the session was also spent exploring the importance of girlfriends, sisters, daughters and nieces and the role each athlete can play in the lives of their loved ones who may be experiencing difficulties with their gambling.
Research tells us that people with gambling problems are more likely to seek help if a significant person in their life discusses their options with them and supports them through the process.
Many of the players asked questions of foundation ambassador Matt Torcasio after he shared his story about his own difficulties with gambling. Matt also talked to them about the important role his partner Lauren has played in him recognising he had a problem, encouraging him to seek help and supporting him through his recovery.
If your club is interested in the foundation providing a similar session, please contact Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation Senior Partnership Coordinator Bonnie Swan on 9452 2659 or [email protected].
