Victorian Netball League Grand Finals Preview

Championship

CITY WEST FALCONS vs BOROONDARA EXPRESS – Game Time: 8pm

The Championship Falcons have been just about all-conquering in 2015 outside of a draw in their opening match against Melbourne University Lightning and a blemish to Monash University Storm mid-season.

They hold the confidence of three wins from three meetings so far this year, although despite having to wait an extra week to find their way into the Grand Final, it was the Express who may take more out of the Major Semi Final, losing by just two goals.

The most recent clash is a much more accurate representation of what is likely to be put on display on Saturday night, with the Express and Falcons’ previous two clashes being decided by 24 and 21 goals respectively.

However the relief is that it is the two best teams vying in the do-or-die clash for VNL supremacy.

The Express were largely untroubled in their Preliminary Final last weekend, their 17-goal opening quarter enabling them to establish their lead and hold off the hopeful Saints.

Whichever side can limit the influence of the other’s scorer will go a long way to deciding their Grand Final fate.

Division 1

CITY WEST FALCONS vs WILSON STORAGE SOUTHERN SAINTS – Game Time: 6pm

It’s a Grand Final rematch few expected to happen.

Certainly with 13 minutes left to play of last week’s Preliminary Final, only the most stoic Saints supporter would’ve backed their side into erase a 10-goal margin, before winning in dramatic fashion by two goals over Boroondara Express last week.

The Falcons have been the best team of the season by a considerable margin through the home-and-away season, only a slip-up in Round 18 preventing a perfect win-loss record.

10 minutes of power turned the tide in their favour in the major semi-final as they accounted for the Express, before watching the very team they beat implode and see the Saints look to attempt back-to-back premierships.

The Falcons know the score however. The script has eerie parallels to last season when they were humbled at the final hurdle after an almost perfect 2014.

They carry the confidence of two comfortable wins through the season over the Saints, but will it be the Saints – perceived underdogs – and their ability to fight for their four consecutive wins leading into the Grand Final that may see an upset?

19 & Under

CITY WEST FALCONS vs GEELONG COUGARS – Game Time: 4pm

With the season series poised advantage Geelong Cougars two-games-to-one over the City West Falcons, it is indeed fitting that the two best teams battle it out for VNL supremacy on the biggest stage.

After hurtling toward the mid-season with seven straight wins to start the season that included a hard-fought victory over the previously undefeated Falcons in Round 6, the Cougars were their own worst enemy, recording consecutive losses to the Blaze and Sovereigns.

It became a line in the sand moment for Geelong, winning their last nine games and overtaking the Falcons back at the top of the table when they completed the home-and-away double with a six-goal win over City West.

The Falcons had their revenge, a gritty seven-goal win earning them a free pass to the Grand Final, while the Cougars had to work hard against the Sovereigns last Wednesday night.

Won’t surprise too many if this goes into over time.
