The fast growing Yea Tigers Football Netball Club and Yea Tennis Club will soon be able to take on more players and competitions following today’s news of a $73,000 Victorian Coalition Government grant to build an extra multi-purpose court at Yea Showgrounds and Recreation Reserve.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Damian Drum joined Member for Seymour and candidate for Eildon Cindy Mcleish today at the local sporting hub to announce the funding from the Napthine Government’s Country Football Netball Program.

“The Napthine Government understands the importance of sporting clubs to the community and how they contribute to building a more active Victoria. In so many places the sporting club is the backbone of a regional community, and the Coalition is
proud to invest in projects that assist regional clubs,” Mr Drum said.

“With more and more families moving to regional centres like Yea, we’re committed to building a better Victoria and ensuring that everyone, whatever their age or background, can get more active and healthy through local sport.”

The $73,000 funding boost goes towards
a multi-purpose netball and tennis court complete with lighting, additional spectator bench, an upgraded coach’s box and perimeter fencing.

Ms McLeish thanked funding partners
the Murrindindi Shire Council for its $5,000, the Tigers for kicking in $31,500 in cash and in-kind contributions, and said the club was close to her heart.

“Growing up in Yea, this venue played a special part in my family background, with the netball pavilion named after my aunty and uncle,” Ms McLeish said.

“For the 113-strong netball section which has been struggling to cater for its teams on the existing court, this is great news.  It’s also great for the tennis club which will soon have access to an additional court facility,” Ms McLeish said.

“This is just one of the 15 projects that have benefitted from a share in over $1 million under the latest round of the Napthine Government’s Country Football Netball Program,”Mr Drum said.

“The program is a $10 million partnership with the AFL, AFL Victoria and Netball Victoria to upgrade and replace football and netball facilities throughout Victorian country and outer metropolitan areas.”
