Coaching for Grassroots and Pathways

Gerard Murphy: Drills - Error detection & Correction


Recently announced as one of the 202 Victorian state team coaches, Murphy has worked as a program coach within Netball Victoria’s Talent Academy, been the Head Coach of the Central East Talent Academy, and completed his High Performance coaching accreditation – the highest level of netball coaching accreditation on offer. With a long-standing role with the Victorian Netball League Geelong Cougars, he coached their 2019 Championship team to a premiership.

Debra Armstrong: Game Day Coaching


Deb Armstrong is a High Performance Coach holding Netball Victoria Level Three accreditation and a place in Netball Victoria’s Hall of Fame, inducted in 2008. She was instrumental in introducing the Mentor Coach and Coaches in the Field programs in Victoria and has authored material for Netball Victoria and Netball Australia. She also brings experience and expertise as a State League/VNL Head coach of several clubs, past Victorian Player and coach, AIS Scholarship Coach, Australian Apprentice Coach, Victorian selector and Australian Junior selector.


Tim Marshall & Nicole Bullen: Umpire Pathway


Tim has more than nine years’ experience umpiring which he started in Queensland. He moved to Victoria in 2015 where he become a part of the Netball Victoria B Grade Squad then progress to umpiring at the Bupa Victorian Netball League. He received his All Australian (AA) Badge in 2018 and has been umpiring in the Suncorp Super Netball for the last two seasons.

Nicole Bullen became the fourth ever Bupa VNL umpire to receive her A Grade umpiring accreditation in 2018. Like Tim, Nicole was a part of the Targeted Umpire Program. 2019 saw her take out the Bupa VNL Umpire of the Year award, a credit to her commitment to netball.


Annie Castles & Joanne Davidson: Mentoring- How to & How to be!


Employed with Netball Victoria for over two decades as the Umpire Development Co-ordinator, Annie Castles’ extensive umpiring knowledge has seen her shape the best umpires in netball. She has dedicated her time ensuring umpires are precise in their measures and understand their role.

Joanne commenced her umpiring journey at the age of 14 at Vermont Netball Association playing at a representative and State League level, and honing her umpiring craft.  While still a C Grade umpire, Jo entered the Zone Academy Umpires Program in 2001 and went on to receive her B Grade badge in 2002.  After receiving her B Grade badge Jo entered the Victorian State League competition as an umpire where she was awarded her A Grade badge in 2005. She umpired VNL for a total of 14 years before stepping up as one of the High Performance Umpire Coaches, continuing her work today.

Kate Wright: Game v's Match Management


Kate was awarded her All Australian (AA) umpire award in 1999 and has held an IUA award (International Umpire) since 2001.  Kate has travelled extensively overseas to umpire at the World Netball Championships in 2007 and 2011, the World Youth Netball Championships in 2009 and numerous test series over the past 14 years of International umpiring.  Kate has just returned from the UK where she umpired the 2019 Vitality Quad Series involving Australian, New Zealand, England and South Africa.

The experience and knowledge that Kate has developed over the years through her overseas netball commitments and those at home is invaluable. She continues to officiate overseas and at home at the elite level as well as mentoring and coaching young umpires including her own daughter at the local Association.

Terry Dillon: Setting Up Successful Clubs


Nobody knows more about Sports Administration whether that be Clubs, Leagues, Association’s, State and National their issues, and how to solve them, than Terry Dillon. Terry is the most sought-after authority of Administration of Sport in Australia working for more than two decades with the biggest Sporting Clubs in Australia to servicing Community Grass Roots organisations.

Terry is using his wealth of experience to guide and support administrators from grass roots to the highest levels of Australian sport. Terry can assist you – explain how running a successful club is just the same no matter how big, or small, it is.

Laura Johnston: Child Safeguarding Simplified


Laura is recognised as a sports industry leader in child safeguarding, sport integrity and people & culture in sport. Now running her own People, Integrity & Culture consulting business for sport more broadly, Laura provides practical integrity (child safeguarding in particular) guidance, advice and facilitation for sport, as well as people and culture expertise to sport. Laura is an experienced facilitator of awareness, education, leadership, strategy and team workshops, drawing on her experience and innate ability to engage with people from grassroots sport to sporting Boardrooms.
