Netball Victoria is pleased to confirm that the Melbourne Vixens and Northern Mystics will be heading south in February for an exhibition match to be played in Tasmania.
A historic occasion for netball in Tasmania, the exhibition match will bring together an Australian and New Zealand franchise to compete in Launceston on Saturday, February 8 for the first time.
The government has provided funding to bring both sides to the island state with Tasmanian Sport and Recreation Minister Michelle O’Byrne and Vixens star Tegan Caldwell making the announcement in Launceston today.
Netball Victoria CEO Michelle Plane said working in partnership with Netball Tasmania on a number of projects over the last year had been extremely beneficial for both organisations and that this event would be the “jewel in the crown.”
“The exhibition match between our Melbourne Vixens and the Northern Mystics will showcase some of Australia and New Zealand’s finest athletes with both teams sharing a strong respect and fierce rivalry,” Ms Plane said.
“In the lead up to the 2014 ANZ Championship season there will be pride on the line, so it promises to be a great match up as the coaches unveil their new line-ups.”
“Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens are extremely proud to be part of bringing this match and associated events to the wonderful netball fans in Tasmania, and we thank the Tasmanian Government and Netball Tasmania for their initiative and investment, without which this event could not happen.”
Netball Tasmania Chair Elizabeth Banks said the strategic partnership with Netball Victoria had been the driving force behind the game which is “a great example of what can be achieved by two organisations working together for the good of netball and for the community.”
“This is a truly historic event for Tasmania,” said Ms Banks. “This is the first time that teams from Australia and New Zealand have competed in Tasmania and we would like to acknowledge the support from the State Government, and especially Events Tasmania, which has made it possible.”
“We are delighted that our passionate netball community will have the chance to see the very best of international netball in their own State.”
Netball Northern Zone and Northern Mystics CEO Julie Paterson is looking forward to the excitement and challenge of meeting the Vixens on court in Tasmania.
“It’s a very special thing to be a part of making history,” she said. “Knowing that we are the first New Zealand team to compete in Tasmania makes this a very special occasion for all of us.”
“Our players are looking forward to a great match and this wonderful opportunity to meet and talk netball with the community in Tasmania.”
As the 2014 ANZ Championship season fast approaches, the Melbourne Vixens are ready to take the competition to the next level.
The Vixens have kept a number of key players and will be boosted by the recruitment of Australian Diamond Cath Cox, who joins the side along with rookies Caitlyn Strachan and Joanna Weston.
A mixture of experience and exuberant youth, the Vixens pride themselves on a strong work ethic, dynamic play and attacking flare, characteristics which have helped the Victorian side remain in the top echelon of netball teams in the ANZ Championship.
