Victoria will have a new style of netball to play over the summer periods with the inaugural ‘Beach Netball’ competition set to take place at Lakes Entrance on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 January 2016.
Beach Netball is an extension to the traditional game of netball, with the same rules and regulations, the exception being that participants aren’t required to wear shoes and the game is played on a half-court marked out in the sand.
Netball Victoria Competitions Manager Angela Banbury met with East Gippsland Council representatives recently to officially launch the partnership and bring beach netball to Lakes Entrance.
Mayor of the East Gippsland Shire Council, Cr Peter Neal, said he was looking forward to the first pilot program coming to East Gippsland in January.
“Council was pleased to contribute $10,000 towards the event through its Regional and District Events Sponsorship program passed at our September Council Meeting,” Cr Neal said.
“We welcome this innovative competition coming to a popular summer destination like Lakes Entrance, and I encourage local residents and visitors to go for a walk and experience the action on the Main Beach.”
Banbury is equally excited about the new initiative and says it’s part of Netball Victoria’s five-year strategy to develop new products and models for our netball fraternity.
“I expect that Beach Netball will help promote the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and will result in women, and men, of all ages enjoying their summer holidays by the beach,” said Banbury.
“It’s important that we modify our sport and continue to introduce new and exciting programs to encourage our Victorian communities to get active.”
Beach Netball will be played at Lakes Entrance Main Beach and consist of competitive and social divisions.
Associations and Leagues in areas surrounding Lakes Entrance will support the implementation of the new initiative and ensure its sustainability.
