Victorian Netball League (VNL) major partner Defence Force Recruiting put Melbourne University Lightning through their paces in a drill session on Sunday 6 December as part of their intensive pre-season training program.
The drill session incorporated a narrative from the Battle of Doan as the athletes completed a series of military exercises that put them in the shoes of deployed troops during the 2011 combat in Afghanistan.
This was just one of many sessions Lightning athletes will conquer in the lead up to the 2016 Victorian Netball League season.
Appreciating the importance of strength and conditioning training in preparation of the physical demands of the netball season ahead, Defence Force Recruiting challenged the athletes’ mental and physical capabilities.
Captain Angela Madden, Defence Force Recruiting Specialist Recruiting Team – Women, said the session was a great success.
“It was great to assist Melbourne University Lightning with their pre-season training and prosper that partnership between VNL and Defence Force Recruiting,” said Captain Angela Madden.
“It was a good opportunity to expose young women to the career opportunities they have with the Australian Defence Force, whilst also highlighting what we have in common; teamwork, leadership and fitness.”
