Netball Victoria has announced the coaching line-up for the 2015 Victorian state teams set to compete in the Underage National Netball Championships in Brisbane and Sydney next year.
Ashley Chapman is the second male in history to be appointed to the head coaching position of a Victorian team, with Kate Upton receiving the call to lead the 19/U team after working with the Victorian Flames over the past two years.
“I’m honoured and proud to be given the opportunity to lead a Victorian team at a national championships,” Chapman said.
“The 17/U team has had an extremely successful past and I plan on continuing the Victorian dominance in this age group next year.”
Chapman was an Apprentice Coach with the 2013 17/U team (champions) and Assistant Coach of the 2014 19/U team, as well as being a member of the City West Falcons Coaching Panel. Having represented both the Victorian Cyclones and Australian Men’s Netball team, Chapman brings a wealth of knowledge from both a playing and coaching perspective at the elite level.
Upton moves into the position of head coach of the 19/U team after serving her apprenticeship within the Flames program and 21/U state team program. Upton is the current Championship head coach of DC North East Blaze and has extensive experience with the Netball Victoria Zone Academy programs.
Former Australian and Victorian representative Nicole Richardson has been given the nod to take over the reins as head coach of the 21/U team following successful stints as head coach for both the 17/U and 19/U state teams.
Richardson said she was ”thrilled to be given the opportunity to lead the 21/U team in Queensland next year.”
“The role of 21/U coach is exciting yet challenging at the same time,” Richardson said.
“Last year we came extremely close to taking out the title and we look forward to assembling a team and game structure that will hopefully bring the silverware back to Victoria.”
“We have an experienced group of coaching personal across all age groups and with the calibre of athletes in the Netball Victoria pathway we will have a number of selection dilemmas in the coming weeks.”
Trials for the 17/U Victorian state team kick off at the Inter Academy Weekend on October 11 at the State Netball and Hockey Centre, with the 19/U and 21/U trials to follow.
