Last week School Sport Victoria, in conjunction with Netball Victoria, hosted the 2014 15/U National Schoolgirls Championships at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.
Victoria managed a second place finishing against New South Wales 46-36 after the week long competition concluded, with every State and Territory across Australia sending a representative side.
Captain of the Victoria side Kate Kelly-Oman said she was “absolutely ecstatic for my girls, and I’m so proud of them for coming second. It is a great effort and I’m just over the moon.”
Five Victorian athletes were selected as part of the national team with Kelly-Oman, Zali Misfud, Tahnysha Salanoa, Allie Smith and reserve Imogen Sexton.
“It was so amazing, it was probably the most nerve racking thing sitting there, but yeah it was absolutely amazing,” said Misfud.
Her teammate in Salanoa said “it feels amazing to be named in the team. I wasn’t expecting it but I was happy with my performance in the end.”
Over the course of the week, Victorian coach Kate Bird made the call to swing Smith from goal attack to goal defence, with the talented junior also gaining selection in the national side.
“I was absolutely over the moon when I heard it, I didn’t think I was going to get in but it came through in the end.”
“With a great coach like Kate, she helped me through the whole way and I had my teammates behind me.”
Netball Victoria Zone Academy participants are invited to attend trials for the 2015 School Sport Victoria team, with other interested parties able to apply through their school.
