Donald All Abilities Netball Program

Netball Victoria, The Mallee Sports Assembly, Donald Netball Club, Donald High School and the Donald Primary School have been working together for the past 6 weeks to provide increased physical activity options for people of all abilities. This is also supported by Sport & Recreation of Victoria who also focus on inclusive sport & recreation.

We had participants and staff from McCallum Day Services-St Arnaud, Woodbine-Warracknabeal and community members attend each week. The sessions included warm up drills, goal shooting practice and then followed by an energetic and fun game of netball.

Our participants were full of energy and enjoyed the session with lots of new skills learnt to take to the netball court.

GVL Hall of Fame Inductee - Debbie Atikinson

Congratulations to Debbie Atkinson on her recent induction into the Goulburn Valley League’s Hall of Fame.

Debbie Atkinson became a sensation when she burst onto the scene as a Shepparton Swans player in the second year of the competition1984. Debbie had played her junior netball in the Shepparton Netball Association and the Swans were aware of her talent and recruited her to play in the GV competition. Debbie was just what the Swans needed as she showed her talents in attack and as a goal shooter and helped to put winning scores on the board for the red and white colours.

From her first game, the umpires were very impressed with Debbie’s performance. She amassed 39 votes to win the Wellman family medal as best player in the League. It was a triumph for the Swans, Debbie also won the Swans best player award in a preview of what was to follow.

However Debbie chose to play with her friends at Ardmona the next year, where she won the KDL Netball medal.

She returned to the Swans in 1986 and won her second Swans best player award and her second Wellman medal.

1987 saw Debbie coaching and playing with the Wunghnu Netball team in the Picola League.

Debbie was chosen in the Australian indigenous Netball team and played in an international competition in the Cook Islands.

She returned for a third season with the Swans in 1988 where once again, she was successful in winning her third Wellman Family medal as she helped the Swans team become runner up in A Grade and won the Swans best player trophy again. Debbie was also selected in the GVNL ”All Stars” team, voted by all clubs.

Debbie spent her final season with the Swans in a wonderful culmination of her 78 games in red and white, celebrating the 1989 A Grade premiership.

It was not surprising that Debbie was inducted into the Swans Hall of Fame in 2013.

Debbie is still involved with Netball, as the mother of 5 netballers who are all goal shooters, she keeps busy helping them compete in the sport.

The Goulburn Valley League now recognises Debbie Atkinson’s performance and welcomes her as the second netballer to be inducted as member of the GVL Hall of Fame.

250 Game Milestone - Alicia Gladman

Kangaroo Flat FNC have great pleasure in being able to celebrate and commemorate Alicia Gladman this weekend, as she takes to the court for the Flat in her 250th game at the Club.

Alicia’s time at the Flat started back on 7th April 2001.   Her time with the Club has seen her be a prominent and well known defender, playing in the ring as either a GD or GK.  Over the years, she has managed to play an integral part in 7 successful premiership sides.

Over 16 years of playing netball and in that time, Alicia has brought into her and her husband Andrew’s world, 2 beautiful daughters; Chloe and Olivia

An amazing milestone and one that the club are extremely proud to be able to celebrate with Alicia.  Alicia is well known by all in the league for her tenacity, her aerial ability, and her consistent “can do” mental approach to any given game; be the team’s task big or little.  She strives to provide her team mates with the same enthusiasm and provides great encouragement to those around her.

Congratulations Alicia.

600 Game Milestone - Kelli Halden

Kelli Halden chalks up another milestone for her beloved Tallygaroopna this weekend playing her 600th game for the club, where she remains the highest games holder at the club by 100 games and as such the only player to have ever reached such a feat.

Current B Grade Playing coach, Kelli has been with the club since 1987 and when she steps on the court will have played 396 A Grade and 203* B grade games.

In her 600-game career, she has three Premierships under her belt as coach with one of those as playing coach of the 2008 A Grade Flag where they finished as premiers & champions and also first A Grade premiership in Tally’s History.

She has coached 16 different teams across 4 grades, has won 13 club best and fairest along the way and filled in numerous committee positions across the years.

Kelli Halden nee Hosie has a long family history at the club, both parents’ also being life members of the club and also having played alongside Aunties, sisters, nieces, cousins etc. as well as this year getting the opportunity to play an A Grade game with her eldest daughter Cienna, while her youngest Marlee has joined the netball ranks in the 13 & Under age group this year.

She is not only a life member of the club which she was awarded in 1999, she is also a life member of the Kyabram District Football Netball League for her service on the KDL Board and within the league.

Kelli is an integral part of the club Tallygaroopna in its present but also its history and we wish her all the best in her 600th game.

Our team attended the 2019 Western Victorian Careers Expo in Horsham. The Western Victorian Careers Expo is the largest Expo in the state to provide information on career opportunities to Western Victorian students, school leavers, job seekers, career changes and to people who are considering further study or training.

We spoke about some opportunities we provide at Netball Victoria such as our online training courses such as the online Foundation Coaching and Umpiring coaches, and yes we had plenty of goal scorers on our inflatable!

SELC

In term 2 we ran a program at the Shepparton English Learning Centre. The 4 week program consisted of the participants learning the sport of netball such as focusing on ball handling skills, defense and footwork.

By the end of the program we had all participants on the court playing their first game of netball. Lots of fun had, we can’t wait to come back!
