Netball Victoria is pleased to announce the appointment of the new Victorian Fury head coach Kristy Keppich-Birrell, as well as the reappointment of Victorian Flames head coach Cathy Fellows for another two years.
Keppich-Birrell comes into the role as the fourth coach of the extremely successful Fury side, the team finishing off the 2013 Australian Netball League undefeated and walking away with the title.
Currently the Victorian 21/U state team coach, Keppich –Birrell has been part of the Victorian high performance coaching system for a number of years and has worked with both Victorian ANL sides.
Speaking of her appointment to the position, Keppich-Birrell was thrilled to be given the nod and is looking forward to working with the ANL athletes in the coming months.
“It is really exciting and I feel very honoured to be part of the group of coaches that have taken on this role, with the likes of Carol Byers, Cathy Fellows and Stacey West coaching in the past, so there are big shoes to fill but I feel like I’m ready and I feel very much like the players who have come along the pathway one step at a time and this is the next step for me and I am really excited about the challenge,” Keppich-Birrell said.
“I’ve have the luxury of being involved with both Fury and Flames now, so it is great to have an understanding of how the two teams operate and then how I can use that knowledge to put forward the best for our Victorian teams.”
Keppich-Birrell and Fellows will use the 2014 Devine Victorian Netball League to identify and scope Victorian talent ahead of announcing squads later on in the year.
“I am looking forward to building a team, which I think is one of my strengths as a coach, and the challenge with ANL is bringing together a team in such a short period of time from so many different places and making things work,” Keppich-Birrell said.
“We are great friend but also great competitors, however the fantastic thing about working with Cathy is the sharing information and working together to achieve similar goals for our Victorian athletes.”
Fellows returns to the Victorian Flames outfit after their inaugural season finishing third on the ladder.
The two year appointment will see Fellows using her selection skills and identifying some of Victoria’s young talent to help continue to push the Flames side up the ladder.
“We are looking to build from what we have already developed through Flames and Fury, that development program showed last year that our depth in the Victorian Netball League is exceptionally strong, and it’s going to be a fight for positions in both teams because the players have shown they can perform at the elite level,” Ms Fellows said.
Fellows has also been appointed to a two year position by Netball Australia as a selector for the 17 and Under National Squad.
Netball Victoria is now calling for Victorian athletes to nominate for the 2014 Australian Netball League. Athletes must nominate to represent Victoria in the Australian Netball League with selectors finalising a squad in the coming months.
