VU Western Lightning has received a boost for the 2014 VNL season with the support of the Sunbury Netball Association.

The Sunbury Netball Association will co-host round four of the 2014 Devine Victorian Netball League at the Boardman Stadium as part of their 40th anniversary celebrations.

VU Western Lightning President Lindy Murphy said “VU Western Lightning is thrilled to be bringing another home game to Sunbury.”

“A key strategy of VU Western Lightning is to align with and support grassroots junior netball programs as part of our commitment to providing a development pathway for players from the western metropolitan areas of Melbourne and regional north Victoria.  Sunbury Netball Association is a strong community partner of VU Western Lightning,” Ms Murphy said.

“The partnership enables us to connect with grassroots communities through the implementation of mutually beneficial programs such as the home game and junior coaching clinic.”

“We are delighted to be supporting the new generation of netballers just commencing their journey along the high performance pathway, said Fiona Tanner, President of the Sunbury Netball Association.

“High performance netball opportunities do exit for country players but without an event such as this it is difficult to illustrate the pathway to the rising stars within our community. We have three players from the Sunbury and the Northern region playing in the VU Western Lightning teams on the 1st March.” Ms Tanner said.

VU Western Lightning Head Coach, Matt Hills said “the event gives VNL clubs the opportunity to showcase the talent that they have recruited from regional areas.”

“Aspiring junior players are able to watch netball played at the highest state level, and it’s a wonderful chance for local netballers to play in the same environment as Victoria’s rising netball stars.”

“Sunbury and the northern region of Victoria have a proud history of developing talented players that have gone on to represent Victoria and play in the ANZ Championship competition.”

Round 4 of the 2014 Victorian Netball League will be held at Boardman Stadium, corner Wilsons Lane and Mitchells Lane, Sunbury, on Saturday 1st March, 2014 commencing at 4:30pm with tickets available at the door.

The three match event will feature VU Western Lightning, finalists in the 2013 Championship Division, and DC North East Blaze.

Local up and coming junior players from the Sunbury Netball Association will take on the VU Western Lightning Development Squad, the Lightning Bolts, in the curtain raiser match.
