Green Band initiative

Protecting our young umpires and coaches | Fostering respect in netball

The Green Band initiative is part of Netball Victoria’s ongoing commitment to creating a safe, supportive, and respectful environment for all members of our netball community, especially our young umpires and coaches. The program empowers umpires under the age of 18, by providing them with green bands and scrunchies to enhance visibility and promote empathy and respect from players, coaches, and spectators.

Why the Green Band initiative?
- Safeguards umpires under 18 years old and raises awareness of Child Safe Standards.
- Promotes respect and empathy toward young officials.
- Encourages positive sideline behaviour, ensuring a welcoming environment for all.

By clearly identifying young umpires and coaches, we can better protect them from negative sideline behaviour and support their growth as officials.

How it works:
-Umpires and coaches under 18 years old wear a green band or scrunchie during matches.
-Umpire Supervisors and Court Supervisors oversee sideline behaviour and provide support.
-The program works in tandem with Netball Australia’s Safeguarding Children and Young People policy.

Together, we can band together to make a difference and foster a respectful netball community.

TESTIMONIALS

At North Central Netball Association, we have always had a strong culture of respect for umpires. However, since the introduction of the Green Band initiative, we have noticed a real shift in behaviour. Both players and spectators are more mindful, and those small, unnecessary comments that may have been made in the past are no longer there, particularly for our under 18 umpires. The presence of the green scrunchie has created greater awareness and consideration for our junior umpires.

We have noticed that they have been a bit more respectful, and spectators are now more aware of what the green arm bands mean. We have also put our trainee umpires in green t-shirts, which has really helped. This initiative is important to help protect our young umpires and coaches. Anything to get people to check their behavior is a good idea and very important. They are the future of our sport, and if they aren’t protected, they will not continue. Everyone should feel safe in their work environment. They should be able to feel safe, confident, and comfortable where they are working. It starts with us, setting the example for everyone to follow and doing whatever we can to keep them safe.
