Guidelines to smoke pollution and exercise
Smoke haze from bushfires across the state has caused unprecedented conditions and is expected to continue, as a result Netball Victoria has compiled the attached document to provide guidance for players, coaches and officials in our Netball community.
The information in these guidelines was produced by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and the recommendations are based on the current air quality index (AQI), with suggested modifications to training and playing schedules based on the severity of the air pollution.
The aim of the guidelines is to provide a better understanding of how bushfire smoke can affect air quality, and to allow for a more informed decision-making process when determining if it is safe to train or play sport.
The impact of bushfire smoke can vary significantly based on an individual’s current health and previous medical conditions as well as the current air pollution levels, so it is important to remember there is not a one size fits all approach.

ANZAC Day 2020
This year, ANZAC Day falls on Saturday 25 April, 2020. Netball Victoria would like to work with all associations and clubs to make sure that we support the playing of our sport, while also honouring the significance of ANZAC Day and those who have served our country. If your association is intending to play any matches prior to 1:00pm on Saturday 25 April, 2020, please click here and complete the details in the form.
Netball Victoria will submit a request on behalf of your association seeking the Minister’s approval to play netball on ANZAC Day.
The ANZAC Day Act 1958 prohibits the holding of sporting events to which persons are required to pay an admission fee or make a donation in order to watch sport, without the written approval of the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events. The Minister may approve the holding of sport on ANZAC Day if:
- the sport does not commence before 1pm
- a payment is made to the ANZAC Day Proceeds Fund in the case of the sport being held within the metropolitan area, or the RSL Patriotic Welfare Fund through the RSL State Branch Headquarters or local sub-branch for sport in country areas.
Sporting events to be held on ANZAC Day that do not charge an admission fee, or seek a donation from spectators, do not require the Minister’s approval. It is still recommended that relevant clubs discuss appropriate commemorative activities that can be incorporated into their ANZAC Day sporting events with their local RSL sub branch.
