Off the back of last year’s runaway success, Beach Netball will be expanding to two locations in 2017, providing more Victorians the opportunity to get involved in this exciting new style of netball.
Competition will heat up at Lakes Entrance on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 of January, and then at Warrnambool on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 February 2017.
In its inaugural year, more than 250 participants and 40 teams flocked to Lakes Entrance for the two-day competition, something Netball Victoria is eager to see a repeat of.
“Beach Netball is a great initiative that showcases yet another way the community can enjoy our game,” said Netball Victoria CEO Rosie King.
“By offering locations on the east and west of the state for 2017, we look forward to even more Victorians getting away and making a weekend of it.”
An extension from the traditional game, Beach Netball is played on a half-court marked out in sand and participants are barefoot, adhering to the same rules as the regular format.
With both women’s and mixed competitions to participate in, East Gippsland Shire Council CEO Gary Gaffney said the Council was looking forward to bringing the tournament to Main Beach once again.
“We were proud to partner with Netball Victoria to host the launch of Beach Netball in the state and are hoping to build on last year’s great turn out, which exceeded expectations,” Mr Gaffney said.
“Lakes Entrance is a family holiday favourite, and this event is fun not only for the many participants, but spectators too.”
A sentiment echoed by Warrnambool Council who are thrilled to be hosting Beach Netball in February.
“We look forward to hosting our first Beach Netball competition in Warrnambool and welcome the opportunity to extend our hospitality to the competitors,” says Kim Griffith, Manager Events Warrnambool Council.
