This $34.9-million update of Jubilee Park Indoor Stadium will see the expansion of six brand new compliant indoor netball courts which will complement the existing 13 outdoor ones.
The good news comes after Frankston City Mayor Michael O’Reilly announced the Council would step in to meet the project’s financial needs to further enhance Frankston City’s status as a regional sporting hub.
“While it’s disappointing this important project didn’t receive the full federal funding it needed and deserved, Council is excited to get the ball rolling on what will be an exceptional sporting facility for locals and the region,” the Mayor said.
“With netball and basketball such popular sports in Frankston City, particularly for young girls and women, this important project will deliver a regional facility suitable for everyone wanting to play as well as pathways for elite training and competitions.
Amanda Basu from Netball Victoria’s Government Relations and Affiliate Services expressed her delight for this grand project.
“We’re delighted to see this investment from Council, State and Federal Governments to deliver a new home for the Peninsula Waves and netball across the region”.
As well as six netball courts, the expanded indoor stadium at Jubilee Park is expected to feature a 1,000 seat show court, elite training facilities, female-friendly change rooms and state-of-the-art community meeting and function rooms.
From here the Frankston City Council will aim finalise a detailed design for the stadium’s expansion. Construction is likely to commence in early 2021 and be complete to host elite competitions and training in 2023.
