ECHUCA women, it’s time to get hot and sweaty.
Local women are being encouraged to jump on board VicHealth’s inaugural This Girl Can Week, kicking off on Monday.
Running from March 18 to 24, the week aims to help women overcome the fear of judgment that too often stops them from getting active.
There will be a range of fun, free or low-cost activities hosted by gyms and sports clubs across the state — including right here in Echuca — tailored to women and girls who want to get active but aren’t sure how to take the first step.
The campaign is about empowering women to feel comfortable in their bodies and in public spaces – regardless of their ability or how they look.
‘‘There are so many barriers women encounter that stop them from exercising and this is just one way we hope to break them down,’’ Campaspe Shire stadiums team leader Sharon Briscoe said.
‘‘One of the programs we’ve started is Rock Up Netball, which was first suggested as part of This Girl Can. It’s all ages, all skill levels and there’s no need for teams or try-outs.
‘‘There’s no set uniform, women don’t have to commit to every week, they can just come when they can — and they can bring the kids along.’’
Local women are also encouraged to attend the free This Girl Can launch on Sunday at the Campaspe Shire Function Room 2 from 3pm to 5pm.
It will be an information and social evening, with light refreshments provided.
Tongala’s Christina Vithoulkas, who was paralysed in a motorbike accident last September, will be the inspirational guest speaker at the launch.
To RSVP, visit the Echuca Stadium Facebook page.
Rock Up Netball will be on Thursdays from 6pm to 7
