The Victorian Fury leadership team has been announced ahead of next week’s Australian Netball Championships.
Sharni Lambden will take the helm as captain in 2023, having previously been named co-captain of the side last year. Fury debutant Taylah Brown will assume the role of vice-captain as the team heads north to compete in Queensland.
Hailing from the VNL's Casey Demons, Sharni boasts a wealth of experience in the Victorian netball pathway.
As the Fury's most seasoned athlete, Sharni was a Collingwood Magpies training partner from 2017 to 2019 and has been a Melbourne Vixens training partner since 2021. The agile defensive midcourter made her Super Netball debut with the Vixens in Round 7, 2022.
Her versatility and on-court presence have been evident through her previous appearances at national level, including as part of the 2018 Australian Netball League (ANC’s predecessor competition) premiership-winning Tasmanian Magpies team and back-to-back Best and Fairest awards for the side in 2018 and 2019.
Renowned for her multifaceted game and outstanding defensive pressure, Sharni's abilities make her an asset on and off the court; her experience and composure will play a pivotal role in nurturing new connections as the new-look Fury team take on the competition.
“To be voted by the team and the staff means a lot, especially being captains at this high level is definitely something very special,” she said.
“Sharni helps connect everyone together as a team and has been that driver out on court as well,” said Taylah.
Joining Sharni in a leadership role is Taylah Brown, a rising star from Leongatha. With her roots firmly embedded in the Netball Victoria pathway, Taylah has proven herself as a natural leader and exceptional player across seven seasons with VNL club Boroondara Express.
This year marks a significant milestone for Taylah as she makes her debut for the Victorian Fury team, reward for her efforts as she moved through the ranks, including stints in the Victorian 17/U and 19/U teams, as well as her inclusion in the Australian 17/U squad.
Currently a Vixens Academy athlete, Taylah continues to grow and evolve as a player and will no doubt prove a valuable asset to the Fury leadership team.
“Taylah brings the on court leadership,” Sharni said of her vice-captain.
“The way she plays, the talk, and obviously off court as well her professionalism is really there.”
Fury will compete at the 2023 Australian Netball Championships at the Morayfield Sports and Events Centre on Kabi Kabi Country in Morayfield, Queensland from August 21-27.
