Netball Victoria is taking netball to the Victorian community in 2018! The inaugural Rock Up Netball Play Festival series kicks off in Moreland at Martin Reserve on Thursday 15 February, from 4pm to 8pm.
The netball festival will then will travel around Victoria to various locations throughout the year, including regional towns such as Warragul, Wangaratta and Warrnambool.
It boasts a free for all, festival type atmosphere, centred around Rock Up Netball and NetSetGO, along with plenty of partner activations, giveaways, Melbourne Vixen player appearances and much more.
Netball Victoria Chief Executive Officer, Rosie King said the not-for-profit organisation wants to take netball to the people and is partnering with VicHealth to encourage those who’ve been thinking about returning to sport or trying it for the first time to play netball – the most popular sport for woman and girls in the country.
“The Netball Victoria Rock Up Netball Play Festival events are all about getting together, having a go and having fun,” said King.
“There will be Suncorp NetSetGO sessions on offer for children between five and 10-years, Skills & Drills sessions for those aged 10 to 15-years looking to brush-up their skills and learn from accredited Netball Victoria Coaches, and each event will culminate in the very popular Rock Up Netball – a relaxed and social competition for people aged 16-years and older.”
VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said the organisation was proud to work with Netball Victoria to deliver more opportunities for women and girls to get active.
“Getting enough physical activity into our week is so important for good health and happiness. Unfortunately, not all Victorians have the same opportunities to achieve good health,” Ms Rechter said.
“We know that women’s participation in organised sport is historically lower than men – in fact sport participation rates among women are half of those of men.
“We’re working with Netball Victoria to deliver Rock Up Netball, a social version of the game especially created for women and girls who want to give sport a go.”
Netball Victoria is also thrilled, that star Melbourne Vixen Khao Watts, is the official ambassador for this initiative, and will make special appearances at the Moreland, Wangaratta and Warrnambool events.
Rock Up Netball is open to all skill levels, from beginners to advanced and is focused on having a fun game of netball in a social setting – taking away the pressure of competitive sport.
As well as these wonderful ‘FREE’ netball opportunities for all ages, there will be a range of other activities and giveaways on offer at each location.
“The Rock Up Netball Play Festival is a free event for all families. And is really about getting everyone in the community involved – no matter your skill level. We just want people to come along and have fun playing netball, and hope to see local communities coming together to enjoy these events,” said King.
