Netball Victoria has launched its newest community engagement program, Netball United, to provide opportunities and outlets for young people, or those who have previously been exposed to unlawful activity.
Funded by the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program, Netball United is a free weekly netball program run in Kensington and Shepparton for male and female participants between the ages of 12-17 years old.
Netball United aims to engage youth in a team sport, developing skills and values such as teamwork, resilience, leadership, handling pressure, responsibility, and their well-being.
Participants at Kensington will be offered a free breakfast followed by skills session and the first 40 participants will take home a Puma gym sack including a Melbourne Vixens netball.
Netball Victoria has partnered with the Lighthouse Project Greater Shepparton in association with the Greater Shepparton Secondary College – Mooroopna campus to deliver Netball United to Year 9 students who have been identified as the right fit for the program.
Netball Victoria CEO, Rosie King is thrilled with the development of the program.
“At Netball Victoria, we are excited to be expanding our participation and community engagement programs to include Netball United this year, with the assistance of the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program,” said King.
“Through Netball United, we will be able to provide opportunities for at-risk young people, through a team sport environment, that will hopefully translate to many aspects of their personal life.”
The Hon. Natalie Hutchins, Minister for Crime Prevention said “Netball has long been one of Victoria’s favourite sports and this funding will mean even more young people will have the chance to become part of that community, and at the same time learn vital personal development skills that will serve them far beyond the netball court.”
Netball United will run in Term 1 and 2 and the Easter school holidays.
Netball Victoria extends their appreciation to Lighthouse Project in Shepparton and The Venny in Kensington for assisting in the roll-out of these programs.
