Netball Victoria has announced a new community partnership with Western Heights College, giving student-athletes a direct connection to one of Australia’s leading elite netball environments and a clearer understanding of what is involved in being part of a high-performance sporting environment.
The partnership will support the Western Heights College Specialist Sports Program by providing student-athletes with access to Melbourne Vixens training experiences, athlete education, strength and conditioning, recovery, performance analysis, career pathway sessions and direct engagement with Netball Victoria staff.
Designed to bridge the gap between school sport, community participation and elite performance, the program will expose students to Netball Victoria’s high-performance environment and the many pathways that sit around elite netball.
For Netball Victoria, the partnership strengthens the sport’s connection with the education sector and creates a visible pathway for students to see how talent, preparation, professionalism and support systems combine in a high-performance program.
Students will have opportunities to learn from elite athletes, coaches and performance staff, including through Melbourne Vixens training experiences at the State Netball Centre, virtual player sessions, education workshops and activities that bring the professional netball environment into the school program throughout the academic year.
“We are incredibly excited for the Western Heights College Specialist Sports Program to partner with Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens,” Western Heights College Principal Fiona Taylor said. “This community partnership will provide an amazing opportunity for our student-athletes to connect with an elite netball environment, learn from high-performance leaders and understand the commitment required to progress through the sport. Opportunities like this will help distinguish Western Heights College within the education community while providing students with valuable insight into elite pathways and future opportunities in netball.”
“Western Heights College Specialist Netball Program is excited to announce our formal School Community Partnership with the Melbourne Vixens and Netball Victoria,” Specialist Netball Program Head Coach Susan Meaney said. “Together, we have created an innovative and engaging program providing experiences and exposure for our student-athletes to a High-Performance Netball environment, with a landscape that will enrich, build capacity and inspire them as both players and in potential career pathways within Netball”.
“Our student-athletes and coaches are eager to make the most of this unique opportunity. They will be exposed to skill sessions, education sessions, high-performance facilities, performance analysis and Deakin University engagement, while learning alongside some of the best players, coaches and performance staff in the country. We are delighted to be partnering with the Melbourne Vixens and Netball Victoria, who are outstanding role models for our students in sport and life.”
“This partnership gives students a genuine window into what high performance looks like in practice,” Netball Victoria’s General Manager Community, Abbey Misso said. “By connecting young student-athletes with the Melbourne Vixens environment, Netball Victoria can help them understand the behaviours, preparation and support networks that underpin elite netball, while inspiring the next generation of players, coaches, umpires and leaders across the game.”
The partnership will deliver experiences across junior, intermediate and senior student-athlete groups, including viewing Melbourne Vixens training sessions, specialist clinics, athlete education and career pathway insights connected to elite netball.
The purpose of the Community Partnership is to enrich the school’s curriculum by providing a hands-on dimension that connects students with real-world high-performance programs, athletes and staff. It gives students a practical view of the pathway from grassroots participation through development programs and state representation to professional sport, with the Melbourne Vixens providing a powerful example of where that pathway can lead.
