Netball Victoria acknowledges today’s announcement by Netball Australia calling for Expressions of Interest for additional Australian teams to compete in the ANZ Championship from 2017.
This is the first major outcome of a review process that is being conducted by Netball Australia and Netball New Zealand, into the next chapter of the league.
Netball Victoria CEO Michelle Plane stated that the Melbourne Vixens will be the only Netball Victoria team in the ANZ Championship and that the organisation will not be participating in the Expression of Interest process.
“Netball Victoria strongly supports a competitive, sustainable and exciting elite netball competition in Australia,” Plane said.
“We have consistently invested in the ANZ Championship, as is evidenced by the Melbourne Vixens being the most supported and watched team in the league, and will continue to play our part in driving the strength of this competition.”
Netball Australia has not yet announced further details of this process. Importantly, there are no changes to the structure or composition of the ANZ Championship in 2016.
“Netball Victoria’s focus is firmly on delivering an amazing season both on and off the court, and to growing and delivering increased value for our sponsors, members, fans and community in 2016 and beyond,” Plane said.
“We’re on track for another record year in membership, get behind your Melbourne Vixens, join up and let’s pack the Den.”
The 2016 Vixens team will start pre-season training in early January with information regarding membership, ticketing and the fixture available on both the Netball Victoria and Melbourne Vixens websites.
The Vixens first home match of 2016 ANZ Championship season is a Saturday evening blockbuster against current champions the Queensland Firebirds at Hisense Arena on April 16.
