Nicole Menzel
All about Nicole!
Human Resources Manager, beginning in June 2019.
The best part about being in HR is that no two days are the same. I love the variety in my role. Recruitment has been a big focus in my time at NV as we continue to expand our teams and provide even more support to our Netball community.
It’s just me in HR at NV, so all facets of HR are in my portfolio; each day can involve anything from learning and development, compliance and integrity, reward and recognition or performance management, just to name a few.
I started my career in Hospitality and Event Management, which included managing cafes, bars, functions and events. This also eventually led me to HR 8 years ago as I found managing people always involved HR related elements. I’ve since held HR related roles at the MCG, Geelong Cats Football Club and National Hearing Care.
There is something truly unique about working in HR in Sport and I was drawn back to it when the Netball Vic HR Manager role became available, along with the opportunity of working with an incredible leader like Rosie King again (our NV CEO who I had previously worked with at the Geelong Cats).
I love sport! I’ve always loved sport and being part of one that has the highest female participation in Australia is very rewarding (although we will always welcome any increase to our male participation numbers).
There is something very special about being responsible for the recruitment of new talent to NV to continue to grow the sport we all love - Netball. Our employees tend to have additional buy in when it comes to their roles and knowing they are making a difference every day.
My biggest passion is people; watching them grow and learn, achieve goals, and perform at their best capability. Sometimes, I’m just that person to bounce ideas and thoughts off, share frustrations with or ask advice (professional or personal). I love that every day is different in HR. A common phrase I hear daily is “Have you got 5 minutes?” and I always ensure that I do.
There is nothing more rewarding than being able to give someone an opportunity to fulfill a dream of working in sport and then helping them grow to be the best version of themselves.
I’m a people person. We are all now working from home and this brings a whole new dynamic. I miss seeing people face to face and I’m also a “hugger” so virtual hugs are really not cutting it. I’m in Zoom meetings a lot, it's a program we now use several times a day, along with communicating through our Basecamp app (think corporate Facebook). But, I also love to call people on the phone to discourage the Zoom fatigue that can set in.
Employees are probably sick of me checking in “virtually” but they are the reason I have a job, so I think they’ll have to continue to accept it haha. I’m beyond proud of our NV team and everything we have been able to do to put people first throughout this surreal world we’re currently living in.
Given, I’m not really getting that personal interaction with anyone, I tend to annoy my partner when he walks in the door but lucky he knows it comes from a good place. My cat, Frankie, also thinks it’s great to have Mum home 24/7!
