Green Band Initiative
Netball Victoria has officially launched its Green Band initiative in support of young (under18) umpires in our netball community.
The initiative was successfully piloted during the 2024 Parkville Netball Spring season and is designed to identify our young umpires who are just starting out in their careers and coming through our umpiring ranks.
The green bands (in addition to green scrunchies) enhance the visibility of umpires under 18 years old to promote empathy and respect from players, coaches, and spectators, with the desired aim of fostering a safer sporting environment, raising awareness of Child Safe Standards and encouraging positive behaviour, ensuring all umpires feel supported as they develop their skills.
With the support of our strong netball affiliate network, umpires who are under 18 will be issued green bands and scrunchies for the 2025 season. These simple yet powerful tools serve to visibly identify and protect young officials during games. The scrunchies also offer flexibility by doubling as a centre pass indicator.
This initiative is a vital step in strengthening respect within our netball community and safeguarding our youngest officials. Victoria’s Child Safe Standards provide the regulatory framework for the initiative.
