This weekend the Victorian Fury will be looking to get three games clear on top of the Australian Netball League ladder, when they take on second-placed Canberra GIANTS in Round 6 action.
The Fury currently sit one game clear on-top of the ANL ladder with eight wins, one draw and one loss.
However, close behind are the GIANTS in second position, with seven wins and three losses.
The Fury had two close calls on the weekend, drawing level with the Queensland Fusion in the first game, and narrowly winning in the second game by six goals.
Defenders, Kate Eddy, Alice Coakley and Kadie-Ann Dehaney, were impressive and managed to starve the Fusion goalers, securing the Fury’s win.
The GIANTS recorded mixed results in their Round 5 games against the Southern Force, winning the first game by 11, but going down in the second game by just one goal.
The Fury’s defence will again be put to the test this weekend when they come up against the force that is the GIANTS attacking line-up, with Melissa Tallent and Kiera Austin leading the charge.
Head Coach of the Fury, Leesa Gallard, said defence is key to defeating the GIANTS.
“We will need to have all our athletes working hard in defence to restrict the GIANTS attacking end, who have been performing well,” Gallard said.
“We have match-play with the Vixens on Wednesday, and then a Fury court session on Thursday to fine tune our attacking strategies and focus on our defensive work rate across the court.”
The first game of the weekend will be held on Saturday 5pm as a curtain-raiser to the Melbourne Vixens v GIANTS Netball Suncorp Super Netball clash, followed by a rematch the following day at SNHC.
