The Victorian Fury team has finished runners-up in the 2017 Australian Netball League (ANL), after going down in the Grand Final to the Western Sting, 63-47.
All four ANL teams playing in the finals this weekend were put to the test, with three of the four finals going into extra time. The Fury made the Grand Final after winning the first semi-final against the Queensland Fusion on Saturday.
The match was close all the way through, and with a draw at the final siren, extra-time was needed to determine the winner. The Fury eventual victors 55-53.
The Sting also had a tough path to the Grand Final, with their match against the Canberra GIANTS also progressing to extra-time.
To begin, the Grand Final looked to be on a similar track to the two semi-finals, with the scores level 14-a-piece at the first break.
Fury Defender, Alice Coakley left the court through injury towards the end of the first quarter, however she managed to make a return during the second term.
The Fury held the lead early in the second quarter, 18-10, however the Sting rallied to regain the lead – the score at the main break sitting at 24-31.
The Fury made four changes going into the third-quarter to regain the lead, however they were unable to stem the flow of goals from the Sting, as they continued to widen the gap.
By three-quarter-time, the Sting had a 14-goal lead, which increased to 16 by the end of the match, with the Sting claiming the premiership 47-63.
Fury shooter, Kate Thompson, finished her incredible 2017 season with a solid Grand Final, while Coakley and Molly Jovic were two other stand-outs from today’s match.
The Victorian Fury have had a fantastic 2017 season, claiming the minor premiership with 11 wins, two losses and a draw.
