Jacqui Newton will lead the Victorian Fury in the 2019 Deakin University Australian Netball League (ANL), alongside co-vice captains Emma Ryde and Sacha McDonald.
Newton enters her third season with the Fury and her second as a Melbourne Vixens squad member, with a rapid rise to the elite environment for the 22 year-old.
“I’m extremely honoured – it’s such a privilege and I hope that I can not only teach the team something, but also hope that I can learn from this experience,” Newton said.
Newton’s involvement with the Vixens in particular has set her up well to lead the Fury, drawing inspiration from many within the team.
“There are so many great leaders at the Vixens and I’m always learning and being inspired,” Newton said.
“Obviously Kate, Tegan and Liz in the leadership group are such amazing role models, as well as the rest of the team – I’m always learning from them and there’s not one person that I could single out and say that they’re not a good leader.”
Ryde is no stranger to the elite environment, being a member of the Melbourne Vixens from 2016 – 2018 before a knee injury resulted in her missing the entire 2018 season.
McDonald, who was last week announced as captain of the 19/U Victorian state teams, recently joined the Vixens in the pre-season Suncorp #TeamGirls Cup in Brisbane.
Fury coach Di Honey congratulated the elected leadership group, and stressed the importance of the links between Netball Victoria’s high performance programs, such as Fury and the Melbourne Vixens.
“This is a great opportunity for Jacqui, Sacha and Emma to step up in the Fury program and lead the team in 2019 and it’s very well-deserved.
“Their experience in the Vixens environment is invaluable for this next group of Fury athletes, and I’m sure their sharing and creation of ideas and values will be incredibly beneficial to help take the team all the way in 2019.”
The Victorian Fury continue their preparations for the 2019 ANL season, with further details to be released in the coming weeks.
