The 2023 National Netball Championships got underway on Tuesday, with almost 200 of the country’s most talented young athletes representing their states and territories in Darwin across 17/Under and 19/Under divisions.
Our Victorian sides kicked off their campaigns with one win and one loss apiece at CDU Stadium in Marrara, on Larrakia Country.
ROUND 1
17/Under – VIC (31) defeated WA (26)
After a very even contest in the first quarter, Victoria ran away to establish a commanding 11-goal lead by half time. Despite winning the final two quarters, Western Australia had left themselves too much to do in the final terms and were unable to close the gap. Teah Wilson had a great day under the post, scoring 23 of the team’s 31 goals.
19/Under – VIC (52) defeated NT (22)
The 19/Under team claimed a similar victory, leading throughout the entire match to defeat the host side by a decisive 30 goals. Mia van Wyk shone in defence, taking some stunning intercepts while her defensive pressure often forced turnovers.
ROUND 2
17/Under – VIC (28) defeated by QLD (43)
After a solid win in Round 1, the 17/U team came off second best in their clash against Queensland. Mia Lavis scored at 90% accuracy, but it wasn’t enough to stop Queensland from claiming a comfortable 15-goal win.
19/Under – SA (40) defeated VIC (38)
It was a thrilling tussle between South Australia and Victoria in the 19/U division. The Victorian goalers couldn’t be faulted for accuracy, scoring 38 goals from 41 attempts. But South Australia managed to create more chances under the post, and won the see-sawing battle by just two goals.
UP NEXT
Today the Vics will tackle reigning champions NSW and the hosts NT in the 17/Under division, while the 19/Under side will face WA and QLD.
