It was a special night at the State Netball Centre as the 2023 VNL season came to an end. The Falcons defended their Championship title, the Cougars are the Division 1 premiers, while the Lightning struck gold in the 19&U division.

City West Falcons (60) defeated Boroondara Express (54)

City West Falcons have gone back-to-back after defeating Boroondara Express by six goals in the Championship Grand Final. The State Netball Centre was treated to a gripping contest with only one goal separating the two sides going into the final 15 minutes, but a game-changing intercept in the fourth quarter from the Falcons proved to be the difference. Jane Cook continued her hot form with another phenomenal performance under the post, scoring 51 goals at 98% accuracy, while Isabelle Hodgson gave it her all with 43 at the opposite end of the court. Montana Holmes, who was crowned MVP, was near unstoppable in the middle, showcasing her court coverage and pinpoint passing throughout the match. Express captain Casey Adamson fought hard for her side in centre and wing defence against a strong Falcons outfit.
DIVISION 1
Geelong Cougars (59) defeated North East Blaze (48)
Grand Final MVP: Ellen Doyle (Geelong Cougars)
Geelong Cougars are the 2023 Division 1 premiers after an 11-goal win over North East Blaze. The match got off to a blistering start with Blaze taking a narrow lead after the first break, but a 17 to nine goal second quarter from the Cougars set them up for victory. The crowd enjoyed a masterclass in attack from Ellen Doyle, who was named best on and scored 49 goals, while Abby Gedge slotted 40 of her own. Olivia Taylor, Charlie Hoey and Ashlee Smith stood tall in the Cougars’ defensive third, with their combined pressure causing multiple turnovers during their time on court. The match was also highlighted by a fierce battle between Kiahna Fallon and Maddi Wallmeyer who went head-to-head in the midcourt.

City West Falcons (32) defeated by Melbourne University Lightning (45)
Grand Final MVP: Akira McCormack (Melbourne University Lightning)
Melbourne University Lightning are this year’s 19&U champions after defeating City West Falcons by 13 goals. The Lightning were on fire throughout the 60 minutes, leading for most of the match, but took control in the final quarter to extend their lead. Akira McCormack produced a standout performance in goal attack, forming a strong partnership with Kate O’Dywer in the circle, sinking 18 crucial goals and applying suffocating offensive pressure for her side. Asha Gray and Emma Winfield combined seamlessly through the midcourt, with their speed and ability to read play on full display during the night. Charlotte Sexton and Mikaela Minns were valiant for the Falcons in defence, but the Lightning proved too strong.
