Walking Netball

Walking Netball is a modified version of the traditional game that is fully inclusive allowing anyone to participate regardless of their age, fitness level, ability or previous netball experience. As the name implies, Walking Netball is a slower version of netball performed at a walking pace. Walking Netball has a strong emphasis on getting people to participate in an enjoyable, safe environment rather than focusing on the competitive aspect.

Walking Netball is a modified version of Netball that uses rule modifications to reduce the risk of injury while playing. Walking Netball is netball but at a walking pace. 

While reducing the risk of injury, it also promotes a safe, non-threatening environment for play. Walking Netball will improve your physical health and wellbeing and will help you stay active and social, regardless of fitness or age. 

Walking Netball provides a fun, safe environment and encourages adults to have a more gradual introduction to physical activity by regaining necessary motor skills, helping balance, coordination, and better footwork. Other benefits include improved strength, flexibility and circulation, along with long-term fitness and weight maintenance benefits.

Walking Netball also encourages social interaction and is a great way to make friends or even spend time with old friends on a regular basis. Everyone is welcome to enjoy Walking Netball regardless of physical fitness, age or previous netball experience.

Walking Netball is designed to reduce the risk of injury and falls to the players while promoting a safe, non-threatening environment for play, which is achieved through these modifications to the rules:

•	You are not allowed to run or jump. Walking is required at all stages.
•	Players get up to 2 steps with the ball!
•	You can hold possession of the ball for 4 seconds
•	Rolling substitutions are allowed throughout the game.

What is Walking Netball?

Walking Netball is a modified version of netball designed for older adults. Walking Netball is aimed at encouraging participation rather than competition, reducing the physicality of the game so that participants enjoy their involvement and continue playing. Walking Netball is designed to reduce the risk of injury and falls to the players while promoting a safe, nonthreatening environment for play, which is achieved through modification to the rules. Walking Netball encourages adults to have a more gradual introduction to physical activity by regaining basic motor skills, and encouraging balance, coordination, and better footwork; however most importantly, Walking Netball provides an opportunity for players to have fun, meet with friends and develop social networks.

 

Who is Walking Netball for?

Everybody! Every Walking Netball program is open to participants 11 years old and over of all abilities and backgrounds.

 

What are the benefits of playing Walking Netball?

Not only does Walking Netball provide a fun, safe environment for physical activity; it has some physical benefits including improved strength, balance, flexibility, and circulation, along with long-term fitness and weight maintenance benefits. Participants will experience improvements to their physical exercise levels, physical health, and physical wellbeing. Walking Netball is also a fabulous opportunity to develop team spirit and encourages social interaction – it's a great way to make friends or even spend time with old friends on a regular basis.

 

Am I too old to participate in the Walking Netball Program?

No, you are never too old! Walking Netball has been designed to be played at a slower pace which reduces the risk of injury and allows for players of all ability and skill levels to participate. There are no maximum age restrictions that prohibit players from participating, so it's never too late to start. Please note, participants need to be at least 11 years old to participate.

 

How long does a Walking Netball Game go for?

Each Walking Netball game ranges from 30 to 45 minutes, dependent on the quarter length. The recommended quarter length varies from 6 minutes to 8 minutes. Be sure to factor in time to appropriately warm up and warm down!

 

What equipment do I need to play?

Your most appropriate sneakers.

Workout or sports wear.

A water bottle or sports drinks.

 

I am already a registered member of Netball VIC, do I still have to pay the registration fee?

No. Players with current Netball Victoria membership to not require a Walking Netball membership.  If you do not hold current Netball Victoria membership you will be required to have current year Walking Netball Membership.

 

Do I need medical clearance to be able to participate?

No, there are no requirements outlining that you must receive medical clearance from a doctor to participate in the Walking Netball program. However, if you are unsure of your ability or capacity to participate, it is highly recommended that you consult your doctor for clearance before registration.

How do I include Walking Netball at my Association?

The Walking Netball Membership is available to all Associations. You simply create a registration form and competition setup as you would a normal competition.  Please review the association resources here and reach out to your participation team member or email participation@netballvic.com.au for assistance. 

 

How much does is cost to be a Walking Netball provider?

As an affiliated Association with Netball Victoria there is no additional charge to run Walking Netball competitions.

 

Can we charge participants a fee for Walking Netball?

Yes, however it is recommended that the costs associated with each Walking Netball competition are kept to a minimum to make the program more accessible to a wider population group. Each Walking Netball participant will pay the NV Walking Netball Membership to cover them in case of injury during games.
