Melbourne Vixens co-captain Kate Moloney received the Selina Sutherland Woman of the Year Award last week for her contribution to the Diamond Creek netball community, with local MP Danielle Green presenting her with the honour.
The youngest ever recipient of the award, this honour is testament to Moloney’s generous nature and position as an inspirational figure in the netball community.
“It was really special to receive the award. It’s always nice to be recognised, especially in Diamond Creek where I grew up,” Moloney said.
Selina Sutherland was renowned for giving back to the community and providing aide to children in need. She was a strong advocate for the disadvantaged and worked hard in the Diamond Creek community to provide refuge to those struggling.
Much like Sutherland, Moloney was recognised for her giving nature and willingness to help out in the community, consistently heading down to Diamond Creek Netball Centre and providing advice for young up and coming players.
Moloney’s netball journey started in Diamond Creek when she was six and she has been a familiar face around the club ever since, having played with Sacred Heart and then progressing through to Diamond Creek Force.
“Those courts are where my love for the sport grew and there were so many amazing people who gave me opportunities at those courts that helped me get to where I am today," she said.
"For me it’s about seeing the young boys and girls playing netball on a Saturday morning, that’s what brings a smile to my face. They were some of my fondest memories, playing netball and playing with your mates, having fun."
Sutherland was known for her fearless approach to life, making Moloney a fitting choice for this award given her fearless leadership and mentality – both on and off the netball court.
The awards were hosted at the recently upgraded Nillumbik Regional Netball Centre in Diamond Creek, with new netball courts and a pavilion making it the only purpose-built netball facility in the shire.
