Netball Victoria recently piloted a Beginner Umpire Program at Frankston & District Netball Association (FDNA) as part of the organisation’s broader commitment to creating a consistent, state-wide framework for umpire mentor programs.
Specifically, the free program aimed to provide new and aspiring umpires with mentors and education techniques, breaking down the different elements of umpiring to develop confident and knowledgeable participants.
The pilot was delivered across the first six weeks of FDNA’s season. Each session included group discussions, quizzes and a range of practical activities.
After each session participants were allocated to an U/11 or U/13 FDNA game, under the guidance of an umpire mentor from FDNA.
Once the program concluded, participants and mentors reflected on their overall progress and the success of the program.
When asked to rate their umpiring knowledge and skills prior to the program, compared to after completing the program, most participants reported a significant improvement.
“I learned a lot – there are so many things to think about when umpiring,” one participant said.
“I really appreciated the trainers that stood behind me at numerous games, this built my confidence and I felt supported,” said another.
Based on the positive feedback received, Netball Victoria is now planning to refine and improve the program for future delivery.
