The inaugural Netball Victoria Beach Netball competition was held from Saturday 16 – Sunday 17 January, bringing hundreds of competitors and spectators to the town of Lakes Entrance.
Netball Victoria Competitions Manager Angela Banbury is pleased with the result and looks forward to expanding the competition over the next 12 months.
“The number of people who participated in Beach Netball over the weekend has highlighted the demand for different group sporting opportunities that cater to the interests of community members,” said Ms Banbury.
“Some people were surprised to see just how flexible and how much fun netball can be. It was great to have mixed teams and to see people diving in the sand and celebrating 3 point goals, with the surf breaking in the background and the music pumping created a great carnival atmosphere”
“We were overwhelmed with team registrations and made up an additional court to cater for the interest we received. Two of the teams travelled six hours from Clunes to participate in the competition.”
“I can’t thank the East Gippsland Shire Council, VicHealth, Abel Sports, TRFM, Lakes Netball Association, Lakes Entrance Surf Life Saving Club and all of the volunteers and umpires enough for their support. Without their support, the competition would not have been as successful as it was.”
More than 250 netballers participated in the competition and many more came along to watch, with most saying they can’t wait to be involved again next summer.
Grand Final Results:
Mixed Division: Wildcats (6) v 3D (5)
Women’s Division: Redlegs (7) v Ripcurls (4)
