Anticipation is building as the 2023 Marie Little Shield tournament draws near.
With the tournament set to begin in three weeks time at the Waverley Netball Centre, the excitement is palpable as the new look Victorian team look to improve upon their silver medal in 2022.
This year's Victorian coaches, Noel Halton and Naomi Linossier, are bringing their passion and expertise to guide the team to new heights.
Noel, now in his second year with the Marie Little Shield team, has a deep-rooted commitment to fostering the talents of these exceptional athletes.
His journey began with his involvement at Belvoir Special School in Wodonga, where he helped prepare a team for a tournament in North-east Victoria.
Reflecting on his coaching philosophy, Noel emphasizes the importance of cherishing every moment and connection.
"My biggest lesson over my coaching journey is to not take things too seriously and to enjoy every opportunity that comes your way,” he said.
“It's not always about winning or losing, it's more about the connections and friendships that you make along the way."
Noel's excitement about coaching and developing this remarkable group of athletes at a higher level is infectious, and he continues to be in awe of the team's hard work and dedication that has earned them the chance to represent their state.
As they strive to be the best they can be in September, Noel encourages a focus on enjoying the tournament and letting the results take care of themselves.
“As long as we all enjoy the tournament and contribute as much as we can, that’s the main thing we can take out of it.”
Naomi Linossier has been steering the Marie Little Shield team as head coach since 2018.
With a journey that started in the All Abilities space in 2017, Naomi brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the players' needs and aspirations. For her, the beauty of this competition lies in the perfect blend of competitiveness and the sheer joy of playing.
“[The players] celebrate their own performances as much as they celebrate others,” she remarks.
“They help some of the new players learn the game and enjoy the battles they have against strong competitors. The development of the team as a group and individuals is always exciting to watch.”
Naomi's coaching philosophy centres on finding the balance between participation and competition. She underscores the importance of nurturing the joy in competitive netball and maintaining the element of fun.
Recognizing that each player's motivation varies, Naomi's approach revolves around understanding and providing what each individual requires to thrive both personally and as a team.
“Remember your why,” she advises her coaches.
“Why did you start playing, why do you love playing and why do you keep coming back? It's important to find the joy in competitive netball and never lose the fun.”
The bond within this year's team is unmistakable, and Naomi attributes its natural development to the shared willingness to improve. With a mix of experience and potential, the team's growth is already evident and exciting to watch.
As the Marie Little Shield coaches gear up for the tournament, the perspectives of the two coaches converge on a shared goal of embracing the journey, focusing on the process, and giving their all on the court.
For Naomi, the experience of coaching the Marie Little Shield team is incomparable.
“I will always say it’s the best coaching role I’ve ever held.”
As the players unite their talents and enthusiasm, the Marie Little Shield tournament is poised to be a celebration of abilities, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
