It’s been a challenging 18 months for us all.
While we are seeing some light at the end of the tunnel, it doesn't mean this period isn't still tough for our friends, relatives and teammates.
Thanks to WorkSafe, Netball Victoria provides SALT workshops to clubs, associations and leagues to help the communities band together and get through this time as a team.
The WorkSafe Mental Health & Wellbeing program delivered by Sport and Life Training (SALT) is an interactive presentation that gives participants an understanding of anxiety and depression and provides them with positive mental health habits for life.
It educates participants in how to have real conversations and aims to reduce the stigma that remains around mental health issues. Players are encouraged to ask good questions of their friends and to be open and honest about how they are coping.
Tallygaroopna Football Netball Club recently participated in the program, with a large portion of the 17 & U team as well as the club’s seniors attending the session.
Club Secretary Bree Boyle spoke about the importance of the taking the time to participate in a session like the one provided by WorkSafe and SALT, especially in the shadows of COVID-19.
"It was really great to sit there and talk about some of the hard-hitting things that we don’t usually talk about", said Boyle.
"It’s not just about rocking up on a Thursday night to training or Saturday for game-day, it’s really about being mates off the court and checking in with them."
The workshop helps participants have open and honest dialogue about issues that are often confronting and tough to talk about.
"The interaction was great. Having people saying things they probably wouldn’t have been able to say previously, we were in a safe space."
With mental health playing a critical role in our overall wellbeing, Bree explained that the session represents something that all clubs should be focusing on.
"It’s a fantastic session and these issues really need to be highlighted more, especially for the younger generation. This is something that can really help to start the conversation around mental health."
The sessions aim to create a conversation around mental health, that could ultimately be the catalyst for someone who is struggling to seek help.
Netball Victoria is thankful for the continued support of WorkSafe to help all involved in netball remain connected and positive across the state.
