The Victorian Fury have picked up where they left in 2015 by completing the double against the Canberra Darters after an impressive start to a new-look Australian Netball League (ANL) season.
The Fury opened up their account with a comfortable 51-34 victory at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Saturday. Then backed up that performance on Sunday with a second victory, 53-37 at Hisense Arena, to continue their winning streak to 34.
The Fury were led superbly in each game by Captain Fiona Themann.
The 26-year-old formed a winning backline combination with Shannon Eagland, with the pair dominating their matchups against the Darters goalers and laying the foundation for attacking plays up the court.
Fury Head Coach Cathy Fellows was happy with the Fury’s start to 2016.
“Everybody got an opportunity on court and that is part of the learning experience for them all and now we have got some challenges coming up in the next few weeks, so I am excited about that as well,” Fellows said.
Fellows was impressed by the defensive intensity displayed by the team in the opening matches.
“I think our defence through court has been fantastic, we have got a few things we need to fine tune – coming through mid-court and into our attacking end, and getting our combinations settled as well.”
The new-look ANL format got a tick of approval from Fellows who found benefits from playing two matches within quick succession.
“It was actually a really good opportunity to learn from one game and take it into the next one as you do not have that opportunity to often when you play exactly the same team twice in a row so that was a good learning experience.”
The Fury will have a bye next round before hosting the NNSW Waratahs at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Saturday 14 May at 6pm.
