A record 43 indigenous open-age netball teams from across Victoria took part in the Murrun Dhelk Senior Indigenous Football and Netball Carnival in Bendigo last weekend.
Organised in collaboration by the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal corporation, and the Bendigo and District Aboriginal Co-operative, the carnival promotes healthy active lifestyles to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The two-day event brought together communities and strengthened relationships, whilst showcasing Indigenous sporting talent and culture.
Netball Victoria is proud to be associated with the Murrun Dhelk Football-Netball Carnival for a second year.
“It is so great to be associated with an event that promotes healthy living and Indigenous cultures through sport,” Netball Victoria CEO Rosie King said.
“To have 43 teams and over 400 Indigenous women of all ages playing netball is an amazing achievement for all involved.”
“Supporting and developing netball amongst Indigenous communities is a vital component of Netball Victoria’s Inclusion Strategy. We look forward to forming closer ties and relationships in the years to come.”
One Netball Ambassador and Indigenous ANZ Championship player, Beryl Friday, attended the event promoting One Netball and Inclusion NetSetGo.
Gina’s Dream Team scored wins in division one and three, while Echuca defeated the Mallee Tigers in extra time to claim the division two title.
Netball Victoria are honoured to be a part of the event and look forward to be involved once again in 2017.
