The Victorian Fury remain on top of the Australian Netball League ladder despite a tough Round 5 away, against the Queensland Fusion.
The Fury finished the weekend with one win and a draw, maintaining their one-game lead on top of the ANL ladder.
The contest was close in the first game of the weekend, with nothing separating the two teams at the final siren.
The Fusion held the lead early, with the margin four goals at the first break and five at half-time.
However, some tight defence from the Fury’s Kate Eddy and Alice Coakley, managed to restrict the Fusion’s goal attempts, keeping them to just 10 goals for the third quarter and seeing the Victorians take the lead.
The final quarter provided a thrilling contest, with both teams desperate to take the two points, however neither team could run clear, drawing level at 45 all.
The second game of the weekend started in a similar way to the first, with just two goals separating the teams at the first break.
It was a strong second quarter for the Fury, outscoring their opponents 15 – 10 to claim a seven goal lead at the main break.
Continuing their form into the third quarter, the Fury extended their lead to 10 by the three-quarter-time break.
A strong outing from the Fusion’s shooters, Abigail Latu-Meafou and Alexia Baker, saw their team rally a comeback in the final quarter, but it would not be enough to claim the win. The Fury finishing victors, with a score of 49 – 43.
Melbourne Vixens shooter, Emma Ryde, was injected into the match in the second half for the Fury, and scored 22 goals from 24 attempts for the match, whilst Vixens defender Kadie-Ann Dehaney played the full match at Goal Keeper.
The Fury now return to Melbourne to take-on the second-placed Canberra GIANTS in the battle for top spot.
