The Victorian Fury have retained their position on top of the Australian Netball League ladder, after recording mixed results against the second-placed Canberra GIANTS in Round 6.
After a disappointing result in their first game of the weekend, the Fury bounced-back to dominate in game two on Sunday.
The Fury were slow to start their first game of the round, only scoring seven goals in the opening quarter, compared to the GIANTS’ 13.
The team were able to rally in the second and third quarters, winning both periods by one and two goals respectively. However, they were not able to run-out the game, with a disappointing final quarter seeing them go down 51 – 44 in just their second loss for the season.
Rahni Samason was injected into the game midway through the third-quarter and impressed, scoring 13 goals and earning a starting position in the second game of the weekend.
Samason was instrumental to the team’s huge score on Saturday, with the team scoring a total of 70 goals over the four quarters.
The Fury were up by five at the first break, however it was their second quarter which set them up for the match.
Fantastic shooting from Samason and Stephanie Puopolo saw the Fury score 21 goals for the quarter, compared to the GIANTS’ 10.
The Fury would again runaway in the final term, scoring 13 more goals than the GIANTS to win 70 – 41.
The Fury maintain their position on top of the ANL ladder with nine wins, two losses and a draw, with the GIANTS close behind in second with eight wins and four losses.
The Fury now head into the final round of the season with momentum, with their target fixed on fourth-placed Southern Force.
