Taking on a strong NSW Waratahs side, the Fury opened their weekend on a tough note, going down 56-63 on Saturday, before pulling out all stops to fight their way back to win by three goals on Sunday, 53-50.
In both accounts, the Fury were trailing the whole game, but the final quarter on Sunday saw a united team effort get them across the line.
Fury captain Jacqui Newton was disappointed with the result of Saturday’s game, but was pleased they were able to kick into gear on Sunday to get a win.
“I think game one we weren’t cohesive enough or really switched on as a team. Throughout the game we made a few silly mistakes and weren’t really adapting, so for game two we just really wanted to focus on the specifics and looking at those areas where we know we could do better,” said Newton.
“For game two we looked at having more grunt and grind. They were the two words that were thrown around a lot on the day, because in game one we didn’t really put our foot down where we could have, and we didn’t seem like we wanted it as much as them.
“There was never a time on Sunday I felt we had lost the game…I always felt like we had that little bit extra in us. We really came together and said we weren’t going to lose, and we really wanted to come away with a win.
Heading into round five and sitting comfortably at the top of the ladder, Newton says the team is tracking well mid-way through the season.
“The team is feeling really good. We’ve come together really well…we’ve had a few injuries in the team, but I don’t think that’s stopped us doing what we really want to do.
“We’ll do a match review at training, watch some footage and have a look at some combinations and really pinpoint specifically what we need to work on leading into round 5 and make sure we come out on top for both games.”
