There are just 40 days to go until Australia’s new netball league, Suncorp Super Netball, explodes onto the national stage. As the hype builds, Netball Australia has released a series of short videos profiling some of the league’s most colourful characters.
The 20 second pieces celebrate each player’s on-court persona and strengths, in an edgy style never before used by the sport. They are the first instalment of a new creative campaign, masterminded Blood UTD, a Melbourne based bespoke sport agency.
Founder of Blood UTD, David Smith was engaged by Netball Australia shortly after returning from a 10 year stint as Creative Director on Nike Europe and EA Sports.
“Sport is at its very best when everything is on the line, when teams are fighting for their honour, for their place in history, for their right to be champions, or rulers of their town. Super Netball has all of that rivalry, all of that tension. So our job was really simple, just shine a light on it, and let the magic happen.”
Netball Australia’s acting Chief Executive Marne Fechner said, “We’re just so excited about this campaign. As soon as we met David, we knew he was the right person to take netball to the next level.
“Our game is changing. Suncorp Super Netball marks a new era in Australian netball and we wanted to do something completely different and surprising. It’s about highlighting the fierceness and breaking the stereotypes people may have about our game,” she explained.
Eight clubs will contest the inaugural Suncorp Super Netball season, which will feature two prime time Saturday night matches every week, with the remaining two matches scheduled in the popular Friday night and Sunday afternoon timeslots.
The home and away season will be played over 14 weeks, with all eight clubs playing each other once at home, and once away. This will be followed by a three-week Finals Series, to be contested by the top four-ranked teams.
The inaugural Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final will be held on Saturday 17 June.
Fans will be able to catch every match live on the big screen with two matches on 9Gem and two matches on Telstra TV (exclusive to Telstra broadband customers). Every match will also be available live via subscription with the Netball Live App, available in February.
