Maddy Wallmeyer has been one of those players in 2019 that never leaves your sight on the court. Her speed and decisive changes of direction make her a midcourt powerhouse that connects the ball from player to player.
At the Bupa VNL Awards Night this week, Maddy was visibly filled with excitement and emotion as she stood on stage after the MVP announcement.
“I wasn’t expecting it at all and then my name was called and I was so shocked and had a few tears,” Maddy reflected.
“I thought I started off pretty well, but towards the end I wasn’t sure if I finished off as strong as some of the other girls out there and I thought it could have gone to any of them.”
Wallmeyer’s performances have been instrumental for many wins in Boroondara’s season. Her work in the attack end with sister Emma Wallmeyer, and goalers Ruby Barkmeyer and Abbey Ryan, have proved pivotal in matches against top competitors including North East Blaze and Hawks Netball.
Having already starred in a successful season, the hard work of Maddy and her team took them to the 2019 Division One Grand Final against Blaze where they walked away as Runners Up.
“We’ve spoken about it a lot, that even though we didn’t get the win, from 2018 to 2019 has been a huge improvement for Boroondara and one of our best years,
“The girls should be really, really happy with themselves that we were able to pull from fourth to make it it to the big one.
“An MVP is only as good as their team that backs them up, and boy has my team been sensational this year!”
With the MVP and Team of the Year Awards now on Wallmeyer’s resume, there is no telling what the future could have in store for her.
If one thing is for certain though, it is that Wallmeyer is now a true Boroondara girl at heart and we can expect her back on the court feeding and driving in 2020.
“Boroondara is in my blood so I think you’ll see me back next year in the blue playing netball with my mates, because really netball is about a bit of competition and a lot of banter between friends.”
